asp dropdownlist sucks

January 26

as solid as swiss cheese

'Some Field' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.

Hell, I think .NET is invalid but I'm not rude enough to flash it on the screen in big red letters with no options for resolution or recourse (until now).

Of all the problems affecting basic functioning in .NET this one pisses me off the most. The dropdownlist control offered in ASP.NET is pathetic, but forgivable, if it at least functioned in advanced relational scenarios. Instead of investigating root cause and planning corrective action, the .NET team chooses to pursue AJAX eye candy over fixing core weaknesses in their platform.

But hey, who cares about the cracks in the framework when the paintjob looks awesome?

Its not even that we can't find work arounds for some of these types of problems, but why should we have to in the first place? We have to literally count the years go by before these issues are addressed. Why can't Microsoft fix these problems at the source and let us focus on development instead of patching their mistakes? Who is taking more initiative and responsibility for fixing their shaky product(s), us or them?

In the end it points to a management/resource problem. Is Microsoft committing the required resources from its considerable revenues back into quality assurance, refinement and development of their product? Is capable management in place at appropriate levels, or are some of these guys simply in over their heads?

Bill, you are at the forefront lecturing corporate America on innovation, connecting people, globalization, blah blah blah blah blah. Gee wiz Bill, thank you. Honestly, we didn't know, but those were some really nice speeches. Heres a thought; get your ass back to work developing stable product so we do have the tools to meet the changing face of business. How can we trust .NET to safely handle our complex business processes and data when they can't figure out how to debug a dropdownlist control, or even comprehend how we intend to use it?

'Advances in information technology have created a global marketplace of unceasing, real-time activity—change leapfrogs change, and woe to those who can't keep pace. The business whose innovative light bulb is not burning brightly and burning all the time risks being flattened by savvier, more aggressive competitors.'

Right out of the horse's mouth, the company that moves at a snail's pace to iron out its own wrinkles, if it chooses to resolve them at all.
